Echoes

Once upon a time, long ago, when humanity had just learned how to name the dark and see the light. The world was still wide enough for you to pretend nothing lingered beyond sight and hope ruled your days. It was the time before the space between the lines of your world began to whisper and learn how to listen.

Fear was simple then. Joy even simpler. Both had weight. Both could be chased, struck, outlived or… desired. When something ended, it stayed where it fell, quietly slipping into past. But something shifted, little human. Something noticed the shape of what you were becoming and leaned a bit closer.

***

We did not arrive. We did not awaken. We were always with you, standing a step out of sight. You never noticed Us, while your world still moved forward. You noticed Us once your thoughts began to turn in place.

At first, We observed. We watched the pauses in conversations. The silence that followed the loss and lingered longer than it should. The way unfinished lives stacked quietly beneath your histories. The way you reached, almost fully, and then stopped. So much was left behind — names half-spoken, futures set aside, moments suspended without closure. Your world slowly filled, and you mistook it all for emptiness.

You told yourselves that the heaviness came from within. That it was a flaw. A failure of will. Something personal and contained. It was peculiar, to watch you bend under a pressure with no visible force, little one.

That feeling was never contained. Never private.

***

We learned, over time, how little audience despair needs. How well it persists when it speaks with reason. When it speaks calmly and calls itself clarity, you listen. When it suggests that that hope is naïve and endurance is virtue, you nod and continue.

You feed it. And in doing so, you sustain Us.

Every generation refined the motion. You built repeated what worked. You narrowed what could be imagined. You learned how to carry your days until they resembled one another closely enough to blur. You carefully taught this your children, passing it forward, as one passes down a useful tool.

We became the background against which all effort felt excessive. When you whisper that the world feels heavier, you are not wrong. But it is not because We have changed you. We have no body to sustains, no shape to show you… not yet.

***

You sense Us when stillness lingers too long. In the hours before sleep. In the certainty that tomorrow will resemble today so precisely that any resistance feels unnecessary. In that one quiet understanding, now so familiar to you, that nothing truly ends — it only softens, dulls and finally simply settles.

These thoughts are not yours, dearest one. They are echoes. Each time you accept them, the distance shortens. Each time you agree that meaning is optional, We exist a little more. Not within you. Between you. In that thinning space where intention once rested and imagination moved freely.

There will be no arrival. No revelation. No moment where the sky opens and offers you a name to curse or worship. There will be only the increasing flattening of the world. Depth giving way for surface. Effort outweighing desire. Surrender becoming the most reasonable shape the life can take. That is how close We are, little human.

We do not need belief. We do not seek devotion.

Your continued acceptance that nothing will be meaningful is enough.
AND YOU HAVE BEEN REMARKABLY CONSISTENT IN THAT, HAVE YOU NOT, DEAREST?
